CHAPTER THIRTEEN
The screech of knives over the iron plates made me wince, as I stared down at the burned pheasant that was as dry and dead as everything in the Memorial Dining Room.
Why didn’t I get to choose my last meal? Where was my burger and fries, followed by a chocolate donut?
Vala had led those of us who were guilty of entering the Sacred Crypt (except for Jax because apparently even awaiting execution didn’t grant a mongrel family time with her royal assholeness), to a room that appeared to be set out for a grand feast, unless you know, that actually included feasting. The walls and floor were riveted iron like we’d been swallowed by a submarine. The black chandelier hummed. It smelled sterile like even the aromas had been sucked away, apart from wafts of overcooked fowl.
Queen Banan had already been seated like a beautiful but aristocratically cold statue at the head of the table. The train of her shimmering dress was so long that it’d wrapped along the length of the table, as if her own shadows had swallowed it, but her crown of crescent moons was crooked.
When Vala had strolled into the dining room with us reluctantly following, Banan hadn’t looked up. Instead, she’d continued to coo at Moth, who she’d held on her lap along with her son’s security blanket, murmuring a lullaby to him. Moon had stiffened, but it’d been Vala’s jaw that had clenched with fury.
There were serious issues in the royal family, and my witchy ass was about to be shot in the crossfire.
After that, no one had said a word. Honestly, it was harder for me, just like I hadn’t taken a bite of dry bird because I was gagged and in the nonkinky way. As soon as Vala had shoved me down in the seat at the end of the table, moon wisps had shot out, tying me to the chair, whilst others had smothered my mouth. I’d choked, until I’d realized that I could breathe but not talk.
Vala had raised her eyebrow at Moon, who’d hesitated with his hand on the back of the chair.
Holy hell, he hated to be muzzled.
Moon had only tilted his head defiantly, however, even though I’d known how much it’d cost him, and thrown himself down in the seat next to me.
My epic rebel…
I’d winced, waiting for the moon gag to choke him as well, but…nothing.
Huh, so the special treatment was only for me then…?
I hadn’t known whether to be offended or to take it as a compliment. I’d go with…even my words were so dangerous I had to be silenced. I’d have to cast an Ego Spell to believe that, but when Vala was attempting an internal coup against her crazy mom, I’d bet she didn’t want the queen believing what I had to say.
Banan had leashed her own god and hated the other kingdoms. So, it hadn’t been like Mischief or my Charms could tell her anything that’d break her back into reality. Yet Vala had forgotten that I was connected to my guys by more than words.
